Abigail GossOn Saturday, January 15, 2011 Annabeth and Aaron Goss noticed a lump on their 19-month-old daughter Abigail's lower neck. Within hours the doctors discovered a massive tumor starting on her left kidney/adrenal gland that worked its way up through Abigail’s torso, behind her heart, and surrounded her aorta artery. Two days later she was officially diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare and deadly pediatric cancer. The cancer was found throughout her bone marrow, bones, blood and in the large tumor. She was diagnosed as high-risk, stage 4. (The worst-case scenario for a survival rate.)

Abigail’s parents and four siblings did not know if she would survive the next few weeks as this angelic girl went through countless medical procedures in the intensive care unit. More than once, Abigail had sixteen tubes, needles and ventilators hooked up to her simultaneously. She was very dependent on machines as doctors worked on collapsed lungs, distended abdomen, infections, and growing tumors. Abigail showed tremendous strength as her little body fought to survive and as the chemotherapy began to shrink the tumor.

Abigail Goss - Age 1 - NeuroblastomaBy May 2011, Abigail was beating the odds and doing better than expected after having gone through three rounds of the harsh chemotherapy. Each round is a living nightmare for her and the Goss family. However, the cancer had disappeared everywhere except the original site. One more surgery successfully removed all detectable cancer from Abigail. By the end of May, she was declared NED (no evidence of disease)!

Because Neuroblastoma has a horrific history of coming back (especially those diagnosed with high-risk, stage 4), her treatments are far from over. Even after reaching a NED stage, it is assumed that there is minimal residual disease that cannot be detected. When Neuroblastoma returns it is almost 100% fatal. Therefore, more chemotherapy, transplants, radiation, infusions, etc… are all in front of her. Each one is a lonely, painful experience. However, the Gosses, and especially Abigail, are full of faith, determination and hope.

Her parents continue to juggle caring for Abigail and their other four children between treatments and life’s other requirements. From medical bills to additional life expenses, Abigail's cancer has placed a significant financial burden on the family. Although they have cut cost everywhere they can, they are still in need of help to relieve some of the financial burdens so they can continue to focus on Abigail's well being.

How You Can Help the Goss Family

Imagine what you would do if Abigail were your daughter. The Goss family is doing all that they can to help Abigail through the cancer treatments.  Financial donations to the Goss family would be used to purchase gasoline for their car (many, many hospital trips are required), groceries, utility bills and.  If Abigail requires treatment outside of Arizona, financial donations may be used to pay for travel costs.
